Cruise

What to expect when you rent a boat with the
Chicago Electric Boat Company

  • Captain for a Day

One thing that makes your Chicago Electric Boat Company visit so unique is your ability to drive the boats yourself. Whether you’re a seasoned boater or just getting your sea legs, any licensed driver who is 21 or older can drive our boats. As Lisa from Evanston shared, “I was initially nervous because I’ve never driven a boat but my worries were for nothing – it was like driving a golf cart.”

  • BYOB

You read right, all of our cruises are BYOB! As long as you have a designated driver, the rest of your group are free to sip on adult beverages during the cruise, provided they are of legal age. Of course we advise you to drink responsibly (no hard alcohol is permitted) and to keep in mind that there are no bathrooms located on board our boats.

  • Optional Captain and/or Tour Guide

We are happy to offer licensed captains and accredited Chicago tour guides to accompany you on your cruise. Our trained tour guides will tailor their commentary to your group and specific interests, so come with questions! In accordance with USCG law, a maximum of 6 passengers are permitted to be aboard when your cruise includes a hired Chicago Electric Boat Company captain. Please note, these services come at an additional fee and must be reserved ahead of time. Please also note that tour guides are not permitted to drive the boat and are included in the total number of passengers if you choose to hire a captain as well.

Are the boats easy to drive?
Yes! Driving our electric boats are on par with driving a golf cart and cruise at around 4-5 mph. Designated drivers must be 21 or older, have a valid drivers license and, of course, are not permitted to drink while driving. All passengers will watch a short safety video and receive a 5-10 minute tutorial from one of our expert crew members before setting out. Each boat is equipped with a detailed map so that you can plan your cruise along the river. If you’re uneasy about driving (or if all members of your group would rather enjoy the cruise with a drink in hand) we do offer USCG licensed captains for an additional $75/hour. These captains must be reserved beforehand so let us know prior to cruising if you are interested in hiring a captain. If you do hire a captain then, in accordance with USCG Law, only 6 passengers are permitted to be on the boat.
Can the tour guide drive the boat?
No, a tour guide is just that: a tour guide. Our tour guides are not licensed captains and are not permitted to drive the boats. If you would like a captain to drive your boat, you must select that add-on as well.

No, captains will not add commentary to the cruise, they are only there to drive the boats. (Of course they are friendly, so don’t be afraid to chat with them, just don’t expect them to act as a tour guide.)
Can we play music on board?
Of course! A river cruise isn’t complete without that perfect playlist! All boats come equipped with an AM/FM radio and an auxiliary cord to attach your device of choice.
How many people fit on the boat?

Our 18-foot boats, pontoons and donut boats each seat up to 10 passengers; our 22-foot boats can accommodate up to 12; and our Rockwell on the River Duffy boats each seat up to 8 passengers. Not at all! We welcome customers of all ages but please note, regardless of age, every body counts as a passenger towards the capacity limits. This includes infants. Children aged 13 and under must wear a life jacket at all times which we provide at our location.
How much does it cost?
The prices vary based on which one of our awesome boats you are interested in! 18ft Duffy (Marina City Location) - $159/hour Pontoon (Marina City Location) - $215/hour 22ft Luxury Duffy (Marina City Location) - $225/hour 22ft Luxury Duffy (Riverwalk Location) - $235/hour Rockwell Duffy (Rockwell On The River Location) - $125/hour Donut Boat (Rockwell On The River Location) - $165/hour
Do you have activities for kids?
**COVID-19 UPDATE: While complimentary kids activity books will be offered, Treasure Chests will be removed during Phase 3 & 4** Yes! We have a complimentary kids activity book and offer crayons so that they can stay entertained while cruising. Kids are also invited to visit the Treasure Chest outside our office to pick out a special treat either before or after their cruise.
Do the canopies come off?
The overhead canopies must remain on the boats at all times, but you are welcome to raise the side enclosures to feel the breeze! Your crew member will be happy to show you how to adjust the enclosures before you head out on your cruise. If you absolutely need to feel the rays, then opt for our Pontoon or donut boats and their retractable canopy or the 12 Passenger Duffy with her exposed back deck.
Do the boats have heat or AC?
No, our boats don’t have heat or air conditioning, but the optional clear window flaps do a great job of keeping the boat warm when closed and allowing a nice breeze when open.
How much of the Chicago River can I see on my cruise?
That is entirely dependent upon how long you have to cruise. Our crew members are also happy to give recommendations. Check out this blog post where we discuss our favorite routes: https://chicagoelectricboats.co/2016/07/09/trip-routes/
Are there bathrooms on board the boats?
No, our boats do not have bathrooms (or “heads” for you nautical types) on board. We always encourage groups to use the restrooms available at the docks (especially groups with kids) before heading out on your cruise. Should you need to “hit the head” during your trip, you are welcome to return to the docks to do so. Please note, you may not stop anywhere else along the river for any reason, bathroom breaks included.
Are the boats handicap accessible?
While the locations are wheelchair accessible, unfortunately our boats are not designed to be wheelchair accessible. But we have been able to accommodate some handicapped passengers in the past - please call our office for more details.
When are the fireworks and when is the best place to view them?
**COVID-19 UPDATE: As of 5/28/20, the Wednesday/Saturday Navy Pier Fireworks schedule will resume June 13th, 2020 but this is subject to change** One of the most popular times to rent a boat is on Wednesday and Saturday evenings during the summer so that you can see the Navy Pier fireworks show from the water. The bi-weekly show runs Memorial Day through Labor Day. Wednesday shows are at 9:30pm-9:40pm and Saturday shows are at 10:15pm-10:25pm. Saturday, July 4th shows are at 9:00pm-9:15pm. The best place to see the fireworks is just east of Lake Shore Drive, near the locks. There will most certainly be lots of other boats enjoying the show from there, too, so it is important to be aware of your surroundings to avoid collisions.
